- Some users are still having problems with Gemini for Home
- Other users report no problems with their devices
- The update continues to roll out in certain countries.
The big launch of Gemini for Home continues, where Google’s new and supposedly improved Gemini AI replaces Google Assistant on its smart home devices, but users who have made the switch are reporting multiple issues and errors.
Access to Gemini for Home is limited to a certain number of countries and a certain number of devices at this time, and you must specifically enable it if you want Gemini on your Nest devices. This allows for a ton of additional features: you get AI-based descriptions of what your smart cameras see, for example.
However, you don’t have to search far on Reddit to find many reports of the basics breaking along the way. One user says their Home Hub can no longer set alarms or control smart lights, something Google Assistant could easily do, although there are responses in the thread from people who have managed to get this to work with Gemini.
Another Reddit thread describes how the arrival of Gemini has ruined smart home automation: a bunch of actions triggered by a single voice command. The affected user says “when asked to do a very specific thing [Gemini] seems to just do what it wants,” although, again, this doesn’t seem to affect everyone.
Garage door problems
Gemini can’t be that stupid! from r/googlehome
A Reddit user says that Gemini has difficulty reporting whether his garage door is closed or not, which Google Assistant was previously able to do without any problem. Gemini apparently responds by saying that there is no camera available to check the status of the garage door, although there is.
For the sake of balance, it seems that everything works fine for some users. If you decide to switch to Gemini for Home right now, you may find that it’s a smooth, hassle-free operation, or that some of the controls and automations you rely on may suddenly stop working. So it’s worth researching your particular use cases before making the switch.
With an update of this size and importance, it’s fair to say that some bumps along the way are expected: Google is trying to update millions of smart home devices with Gemini, each with their own specific settings and configurations. It is also understandable that users become upset and frustrated when basic functionality is broken.
At the very least, we hope that these issues can be addressed and resolved as quickly as possible; There’s no doubt that Gemini is the future for all Google smart home devices. If you have problems, you can report them to Google online.
