Pakistan has begun the gradual blockade of more than 4.9 million mobile Sim cards recorded under the identity cards of the expired, canceled or killed citizens, the National Datablas and Registry Authority (NADRA) confirmed on Tuesday.
The Interior Ministry has instructed the Telecommunications Authority of Pakistan (PTA) to act on Nadra’s recommendations in a movement destined to curb the misuse of mobile networks through false or inactive identities.

“A total of 4,906,611 SIM will be blocked in phases,” said a Nadra spokesman, adding that the process is addressed to IDS who have not been renewed or belonged to deceased individuals.
The SIM registered in the identity cards that expired in 2017 will be blocked on June 30. Cutting dates for subsequent years are as follows:

December 31 for 2023, 2024 and 2025
The spokesman said that this action aims to “improve national security and strengthen the digital ecosystem making it more secure and reliable.”
Citizens are urged to renew their computerized national identity cards (CNIC) immediately to avoid any service interruption.
