KARACHI: The Department of School Education and Literacy on Sunday extended the reduced school hours, following which educational institutions were ordered to start classes at 9 am, across Sindh till February 4, as the ongoing cold wave continues to hit the province.

On January 10, the Sindh Education Department announced revised school timings, ordering all public and private schools to open at 9 am, keeping the closing time unchanged.

“Following the even numbered notification of this department dated January 10, 2026, the calendar of all public and private educational institutions under the administrative control of Department of School Education and Literacy, Government of Sindh will continue till April 2, 2026,” the notification reads.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the education department said the decision was made due to intensified cold weather across the province.

Following the directives of Sindh Education Minister Syed Sardar Ali Shah, the revised deadlines have been extended till February 4, the spokesperson added.

The education department had initially extended the revised school schedules until January 26 amid a severe cold snap across the province.

Separately, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said on Saturday that temperatures in Karachi could drop to single digits over the weekend.

The Met Office had said the port city’s weather is likely to remain cold and dry with occasional winds.

Meanwhile, the PMD predicted more rain and snowfall in several parts of the country from Sunday to Tuesday.
