The 2026 Oscar nominations have been announced and, although sinners has received a record 16 nominations, it’s not the film or the topic of conversation that should dominate online discussions.
Revealed today (January 22), this year’s Academy Award nominee list is full of names many of us were hoping to see.
As mentioned, sinnersThe supernatural thriller/period drama directed by Ryan Coogler, now available on HBO Max, leads the way with 16 award nominations. It’s also the most in Oscar history, with sinners – one of the 35 best films we saw in 2025 – surpassing the 14 nominations that All about Eva (1950), Titanic (1997), and The The Earth (2016) participation.
However, as I mentioned, despite sinners‘ nominations record, there’s a bigger talking point at hand. that being, F1: The Movie receiving an unexpected nod for this year’s Best Picture award.
Now, this does not mean that F1which you can watch right now on Apple TV, does not deserve to be nominated for such a prestigious award. My surprise comes from the fact that, so far, it has largely been nominated for behind-the-camera awards, including Best Sound, Best Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Stunts, and Best Visual Effects.
In fact, the only time Apple’s original movie won Best Picture was at the Astra Midseason Film Awards. It is not nominated for Best Picture at the 2026 BAFTAs, nor was it nominated for similar awards at this year’s Critics Choice Awards or Golden Globes. That makes its Best Picture Oscar nomination even more notable.
So what chances does it have of causing a big upset at this year’s Oscars and giving Apple its second Academy Award for Best Picture after CODAThe hugely unexpected victory in 2022? It is a great achievement for F1 be nominated for this type of award and, simply put, Apple should be proud to have been nominated.
