- Apple is shaking its Siri development team
- Mike Rockwell, the man behind Vision Pro, is taking over John Giannandrea
- Could this be the fundamental change that Apple needed to wear an improved Siri to the market?
There is a great shake at the upper part of Apple’s food chain, since Tim Cook opts for a new leader to help the company give life to Siri with Apple’s intelligence.
After the reports at the beginning of this week that Apple Intelligence would be a focal point of the Executive Meeting of the 100 best of the Apple Site, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg now reports that the head of AI, John Giannandrea, will no longer supervise Siri’s review.
According to Gurman “,”[Apple CEO] Tim Cook has lost the confidence in the ability of the Chief of the John Giannandrea to execute the development of products, so it moves on another senior executive to help: the creator of Vision Pro Mike Rockwell. “
Rockwell will now be in charge of Siri, according to Gurman’s sources, who have asked not to be appointed, and will directly inform the Head of Software Craig Federight.
With Giannandrea no longer in charge of Siri, he will now be working on other AI projects. The decision was taken during the Apple Top 100 meeting and is said to be confirmed to employees at the end of this week.
Assuming that Gruman is right, this great executive change arrives at a crucial moment for Apple, once a pioneer in the voice assistant game, but now only a mere passenger, since he tries to design a solution for Siri.
Apple had announced its flagship of the iPhone 16 Pro as the best device for Apple Intelligence, but almost seven months after its launch, customers have not yet seen the real benefits of AI.
With Siri de Apple delaying a public disaster, this change in leadership could be the catalyst of the success that is needed to realize Siri with the personal context.
The redemption arc of Siri?
In WWDC 2024 in June, we had to listen directly to Giannandrea about his vision for the Siri announced by then. He said that Siri with Apple Intelligence has a “rich understanding of what is in his device”, and that the knowledge base of the voice assistant “is only enriched with time.”
Almost a year later, Siri still cannot tell him what month of the year it is and definitely does not understand what is on his device.
Rockwell, who can take credit for Apple’s vision pro development, has the potential to re -route the development of Siri. While mixed reality headphones have not necessarily been commercial success, it does achieve some incredible feats.
Tim Cook is likely to have Rockwell’s ability to innovate, as demonstrated in the Vision Pro, to make Siri as good as the company announced on WWDC. And, if he does, all detractors will have to accept that Apple really is back on the road.
