- SitusAMC suffered a breach that exposed both corporate and customer data
- The attack was a crushing type attack, not ransomware; The FBI is aware and the investigation is ongoing
- Affected customers may include large banks and mortgage lenders, although details and perpetrators remain undisclosed.
A global company that provides consulting, technology and outsourced services to some of the largest banks and mortgage lenders in the United States suffered a data breach in which hackers managed to steal some of its sensitive data, as well as details it held on behalf of its clients.
SitusAMC offers a comprehensive suite of services to support the entire residential and commercial real estate financing lifecycle, from loan origination and underwriting to portfolio management, servicing and valuation of debt and equity assets.
His clients include major banks, private equity firms, asset managers, residential mortgage originators and servicers, CMBS/RMBS issuers, insurance companies and institutional investors. Some of the biggest names include UBS Realty Investors, JPMorgan Chase, Hines, Citigroup and Morgan Stanley.
The FBI was notified
In a brief announcement posted on its website, SitusAMC said the stolen data belongs to both it and its customers:
“Corporate data associated with some of our clients’ relationships with SitusAMC, such as accounting records and legal agreements, has been affected. Certain data related to some of our clients’ clients may also have been affected,” it said, adding that the investigation is still ongoing and that outside cybersecurity experts have been brought in to assist.
Authorities were also notified, the company emphasized, adding that this was not a ransomware attack, but rather a simple destruction and capture of data.
We do not know how many SitusAMC customers are affected by this attack or what type of information was stolen. When contacted by media representatives, most banks declined to comment or simply did not respond to media questions. No threatening actor has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
