At least six people were killed when an armed man opened fire in a market in the capital of Thailand, Bangkok, said Monday, said Thai police in a statement.
The deaths include the gunman who took his life, Charin Gopatta, an attached commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Office, he told Reuters.
“The police are investigating the identity of the person and the reason for the incident,” said Thai police in a statement. The five people killed by the gunman were security guards in the market, he said.
No tourist died or is injured in the shooting incident, said Sanong Saengmani, a police officer in the Bang Sue de Bangkok district, where the market that sells mainly agricultural products is located.
Tourism is a key economic driver in Thailand, the second largest economy in Southeast Asia, where growth has been slow and such incidents can potentially cushion the feeling.
In the video images shared by the police, a suspect with a white hat and a backpack hanging on his chest is seen walking through a market parking.
Armed violence and arms ownership are not uncommon in Thailand. In October 2023, a 14 -year -old suspect used a modified gun to kill two people and hurt another five in a luxury shopping center in the center of Bangkok.
A year earlier, a former police officer killed 36 people, including 22 children, in an attack of weapons and knives in a nursery in East Thailand.
