- SK Telecom is now giving replacement sim cards
- In early April, he suffered a malware infection in which criminals stole USIM data
- 25 million customers are eligible, but only 6 million will be served in May
The telecommunications supplier number one of South Korea, SK Telecom, is giving free SIM cards to 25 million of its customers, after the recent cyberatack Usim. However, due to logistics challenges, he will not be able to attend to all who help.
At the beginning of April, it was learned that SK Telecom suffered a malware infection through which the threat actors tried to obtain information from Usim customers. The attack allegedly occurred in mid -April 2025, at night between Saturday and Sunday, when most employees were out during the weekend.
A USIM (universal subscriber identity module) is the successor of the previous SIM card. It is used in 3G, 4G and 5G mobile networks and is found in most cell connectivity devices.

In essence, an authentic Usim the identity of the device in a network, stores subscriber data (identity of international mobile subscribers, authentication keys, contacts and, sometimes, text messages), figure the information that passes and allows safe access to mobile services such as calls, data or texts.
A cybercriminal could use the data to clone the SIM, track the location of people, avoid the security of applications or spy communications.
While the investigation is still ongoing and the number of affected people has not yet been determined, SK Telecom announced that it offers replacement SIM cards to 25 million mobile subscribers, including about two million sheds from budget carriers. However, it will not have more than six million units during May 2025, so the company urged users to reserve an online space:
“SK Telecom has blocked the misuse of SIM information with its FDS and SIM protection services, but still offers a free service for customers who wish to replace their SIM card,” reads the announcement translated by machine. “Currently, we have 1 million USIM, and plan to ensure additional 5 million sims by the end of May. However, there is a lot of customers at the same time, so consult the online reserve application system in advance.”
