When Operai launched its new brilliant GPT-5 model for ChatGPT earlier this week, the plan was to replace all older models for free and paid users, but now GPT-4O is recovering in response to a significant number of user complaints.
“We surely underestimate how much of the things that people as in GPT-4o care, even if GPT-5 works better in most of the senses,” the OpenAi CEO published, Sam Altman on social networks, after announcing that GPT-4O would stay.
However, it is not clear how long the GPT-4O will be reprieve, and will only remain available for those in the Chatgpt Plus plan of $ 20 per month. “We will see the use while we think how long to offer inherited models,” Altman said.
There were also other Altman updates: the GPT-5 rate limits are doubled for Chatgpt users, and some updates behind the scene are also making GPT-5 “smarter”, since the latest model continues to launch everyone.

As we reported yesterday, the response to GPT-5 of many users has been quite brutal. It has been labeled as “horrible”, “insufficient”, “unpleasant”, “atrocious”, as “a secretary with excess of work”, and worse than GPT-4O, with stricter restrictions on how much it can be used.
People are not happy with GPT-5, whether they give shorter answers than previous models, or that present multiple answers that the user has to choose. If you are using AI to try to save time, it is not ideal.
At least Openai is listening to its user base, with the reintroduction of GPT-4O, although it is possible that I do not see it immediately in the model selector if it has been updated to GPT-5. “Users have very different opinions about the relative force of GPT-4O vs GPT-5,” admits Altman.
