Ethan McLeod, a soccer player who competed for Macclesfield FC in England’s sixth division, died after suffering injuries in a car accident, his club said Wednesday. He was 21 years old.
McLeod was returning from a National League North match against Bedford Town when he was involved in an accident on the M1.

“Ethan was an incredibly talented and highly respected member of our first team, who had his whole life ahead of him,” Macclesfield said in a statement. “But more than that, Ethan’s infectious personality endeared him to everyone he came into contact with. Giving his all in everything he did, Ethan effortlessly pushed us all to be the best we could be, both on and off the court.
“Ethan’s professionalism and unwavering work ethic inspired everyone, and his desire for life put smiles on all of our faces, even on the darkest of days. The news of Ethan’s passing has devastated our entire Club and no words can convey the immense sense of sadness and loss we feel now.”
The football forward made eight appearances for Wolverhampton in Premier League 2 during the 2023-24 season. He played 84 minutes with the club.

He was also on the semi-professional circuit at Alvechurch, Rushall Olympic and Stourbridge, according to ESPN.
“It is undeniable that the deep mental scars caused by Ethan’s passing will never heal, but one thing is certain, and that is that Ethan’s vibrant legacy will never fade, no matter how much time passes in the future,” Macclesfield added. “Ethan will live in our hearts and minds forever and no matter what the future holds, his unique smile that mesmerized us all will never be forgotten.
“Our deepest condolences go out to Ethan’s family and friends at this deeply traumatic time, along with the assurance that we will provide whatever support we can to those who need it.”
He served as a substitute player for Macclesfield for the match against Bedford Town.
