- Bloomberg says a new Sonos app update is in the works
- A key feature is additional iOS compatibility
- Anyone else having déjà vu?
Sonos’ calendar may have skipped the year 2025 in terms of the promise of “two new product launches a year,” although the company released a new amplifier earlier in the year, and 2026 will apparently be a much busier year for the brand. So, will we see what shiny new gifts Sonos Clause (sorry) has wrapped up in its sack for us? It’s… a review of the app. Other.
According to Bloomberg, the company plans to rework and update its app offering in the coming months, and a first version apparently already works internally. It’s unclear if that means the Sonos app is simply working or if it’s actually viable for the many customers still unhappy with the latest update. The changes will apparently be optional and will be slowly integrated into the app rather than presented as a big push. (It seems that the lesson was learned there).
So what could really change? Apparently you’ll now be able to control your Sonos device from the iPhone lock screen, using Apple’s recent developments in the area. It all has to do with Apple’s Live Activities (the real-time interactive notifications that appear on the iPhone’s lock screen and dynamic island), which would certainly be a welcome update for iPhone owners.
Presumably that won’t be the only change, as it’s something the Android app already offers, but it’s the only one we’ve heard about so far. However, a company can’t drip-drop features if there’s only one, so we’ll probably hear more about them closer to home.
Keep fans happy
Combining the words ‘Sonos’ and ‘app’ may cause user collusion given that a botched change to the app from May 2024 that was only really fixed in 2025 is now what fans think of when they hear those words used together.
The then-new app had slow volume controls, missing features from the previous app, and a more confusing layout that took users too long to understand. While it’s mostly fixed now, a brief look at the Sonos subreddit still turns up post after post of complaints about the app and its bugs.
As a starting point, Sonos new The new app really shouldn’t have these problems, or it could signal the end of trust in the brand – fool me once and all. The affections of many Sonos fans are at stake, and if the company is planning a successful product launch this year, it will need some enthusiastic cheerleaders to help it out, especially with the growing list of WiiM products hitting the market…
