- Sony encourages PS4 users to upgrade to PS5 via console messages
- A new analyst report suggests Sony wants to extend the life cycle of the PS5 to retain its current player base
- It is also suggested that the PS6 will not arrive until after 2028.
Sony is sending messages to PlayStation users who are still using their PS4, suggesting that they eventually switch to the current-gen PS5, and this could be related to a delay in the launch of the PS6.
As PushSquare reports, PS4 owners are now receiving messages from Sony, encouraging them to upgrade to a PS5, along with a QR code that takes them to the official PlayStation website, where more information on pricing and offers can be found.
“Whether you’re catching up on 2025 hits like Dark Glade: Expedition 33, Arch Raidersand Yotei Ghost or prepare for the most anticipated games of 2026, including SAROS, 007 First light, nioh 3“And much more, now is the perfect time to upgrade your PS5 console,” the message says.
Notably, all of these games are only available on PS5 and other current-gen hardware, so it looks like Sony is persuading gamers to finally take the plunge.
However, a new report from analysts may have shed some light on the situation.

According to a recent Sandstone Insights Japan report published by MST senior analyst David Gibson, Sony may delay the launch of the PS6 until after 2028 to extend the life cycle of the PS5 (via IGN).
The report notes that Sony’s third-quarter earnings are expected to beat previous predictions, with first-party and third-party titles continuing to drive sales, and gaming and networking services, including PSN subscriptions, expected to remain strong.
Additionally, Sony’s third-quarter sales are expected to total around 1.8 trillion yen (approximately $11.6 billion), with operating income of 160 billion yen (approximately $1 billion).
With the PS5’s hardware and software continuing to generate big numbers, it is suggested that Sony will want to extend the life of the console, thus delaying the launch of the PS6.
“Sony expects the lifecycle of the PS5 to be longer than previous generations of consoles,” Gibson said, adding that the PS6 launch likely won’t occur until after 2028.
Gibson also suggested that Sony is more focused on retaining existing PS5 users than driving console sales, as well as noting that PSN services and active PS5 users are at an all-time high.
“PS5 user activity continues to set all-time highs based on usage data,” Gibson said. “Sony is focusing more on retaining active users than expanding hardware sales.”
The technology and gaming industry has suffered from price increases over the past year; One issue we have seen recently is due to memory shortages and continually increasing rates.
For now, it looks like PS5 consoles won’t see another price increase like last August, although Gibson believes it could happen eventually.
Gibson explained that “increased memory prices will not impact near-term performance thanks to Sony’s existing inventory,” but said that rising memory costs could impact the company in the fiscal year, adding that “Sony could pass on future cost increases to consumers.”
The best game consoles.
