Sony has been addressing “spammy” shovelware software for some time now. Although it’s unclear if it was a direct result, the company’s ongoing battle followed an IGN investigation that included interviews from game developers criticizing the lack of quality control on the PlayStation Store and Nintendo eShop and the endless list of “spammy” and “slop” games, along with poor discoverability for studios.
Last year, users found evidence that developer RandomSpin, which released more than 40 titles in 2024 alone, had most of its games removed, including Body camera shooter, Professional supermarket simulator, Backroom Brotherhoodand Backrooms inside the escape.
These games, as well as other titles that can be found on the PlayStation Store, often feature recycled assets and AI-generated images that copy other popular games already available on the platform.
In January, Sony removed more than 1,000 shovel games from the PlayStation Store, all of which were listed under a single developer, ThiGames, so it’s clear that the company has no plans to stop its battle anytime soon.
