Spain agrees to cooperate with US military operations against Iran after initial refusal: White House

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that Spain agreed to cooperate with the United States (US) in its attacks against Iran, after its initial refusal to allow the use of its military bases for such actions.

Previously, President Trump threatened to cut trade ties with Spain after the European country openly criticized US-Israeli military aggression against Iran.

At a press conference on Wednesday, March 4, Leavitt said: “I think you heard the president’s message loud and clear yesterday. I understand that in the last few hours you have agreed to cooperate with the US military.”

Spain has not yet responded to the White House’s claim.

Spain refuses to allow the use of its bases for attacks on Iran:

Previously, US aircraft left jointly operated bases in Spain after it refused to allow their use for attacks against Iran.

Spain’s socialist president, Pedro Sánchez, condemned the joint “unilateral” military actions of the United States and Israel against Iran and also criticized Iran’s subsequent retaliation.

He called for an immediate de-escalation and return to the dialogue table to achieve a lasting political solution to the situation.

Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares confirmed that the jointly operated bases, which remain under Spanish sovereignty, will not be used in US and Israeli attacks against Iran.

In an interview with the Spanish radio station Telecinco“The Spanish bases are not used for this operation, nor will they be used for anything that is not included in the agreement with the United States or for anything that is not in accordance with the United Nations Charter,” Albares stated.

President Trump threatens to cut off all trade with Spain:

Following criticism from Spain, US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday: “Spain has been terrible.”

During his meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Trump said he had ordered US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to cut all dealings with Spain.

And he added: “We are going to cut off all trade with Spain. We don’t want to have anything to do with Spain.”
