The Supreme Court decided on Thursday to review state prohibitions in transgender athletes participating in public school sports.

It is likely that oral arguments are heard later this fall with respect to two cases in Idaho and Virginia Occidental. Both cases focus on state laws that prevent biological men from competing in girls’ sports teams.

“It is a great day, since the female athletes in Western Virginia will have their voices heard,” said West Virginia attorney, John McCuskey, in a statement. “The people of West Virginia know that it is unfair that male athletes compete against women; that is why we approve this law of common sense that preserves women’s sports for women.”

“We are sure that the Supreme Court will maintain the Save Women’s Sports law because it complies with the United States Constitution and complies with Title IX,” McCuskey said. “And most importantly: it protects women and girls by ensuring that the playing field is safe and fair.”
