- Synology’s 2025 Plus range only works with certain hard drives
- He says this is for lower failure rates and compatibility problems.
- The oldest models will not be affected by this new policy.
Synology Taiwanese Nas-Maker has confirmed a new policy that requires that hard drives be used with the singular brand for total compatibility within its 2025 series more of storage devices connected to the network (NAS).
From the launch, hard drives with the Synology brand of Policy State must be used, but the company promises to “update the product compatibility list as additional units can be thoroughly examined in Synology Systems,” said a company spokesman (through Ars Technica).
Meanwhile, this could explain a reduced choice and a higher cost for customers, with possible sustainability problems derived from the inability of users to use hard drives they could have, which makes them useless.
Synology nas hard drives devices
Synology has nine products in its Plus range, which supports up to 24 hard drives, however, users must use only approved storage units.
The company said that “Sinology systems have less risk of impulse failure and continuous compatibility problems.”
Chad Chiang, managing director of the companies of Germany and the United Kingdom of Synology, said: “With our patented hard drive solution, we have already seen significant benefits for our clients in several implementation scenarios.”
Despite the change for 2025 models, the company confirmed that the oldest models sold until 2024 (excluding the XS Plus Series and Rack models) remain unchanged.
Interestingly, Synology does not manufacture its own hard drives, but choose to change the models of popular brands such as Toshiba and Seagate.
This could be good news, which indicates the possibility that Toshiba and Seagate models can appear on the approved list of third -party units on a later date, however, it could also mean that units of other brands could appear on the list.
Of course, this is only speculation, but we have contacted Synology to get more details with the hope that we can get access to a list of pre -approved third parties.
