Tarbela to spills opened to relieve water pressure

The landfills of the Tarbela dam were opened on Saturday night after the water level in the dam reached 1,546 feet, 96% of its capacity.

With the opening of the landfills, the water flow in the Indo River increased to almost 250,000 CUSECs. In view of the increase in flow, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) advised residents of adjacent areas that avoid approaching water channels.

Before the opening of the spills, the NDMA informed all the relevant departments. He also urged residents of low areas to remain cautious and cooperate with the local administration.

According to a statement issued by the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority on Saturday, the water level in Mangla DAM was 1,205.25 feet and was full of 63%.

On the Indo River, there was a low level flood in Chashma Barge, while the flow in Tarbela, Kalabagh, Taunsa, Guddu, Sukkur and Kotri Barge was normal. At the key points of the Jhelum, Sutlej and Kabul rivers, the water flow was normal.

In important places in the Chenab River and its adjacent streams, the water flow was normal. In the Ravi River, the water flow was normal at the main points, while its adjoining baseline nullah maintained a low level flood.

There was no water flow in the main torrents of hills in the Koh-E-Suleman area of the Dera Ghazi Khan division. The general director of PDMA urged citizens to take precautionary measures during the Monzón season.

Section 144 has been imposed around rivers, channels and currents.

The authority has advised people who do not swim in rivers, channels or ponds under any circumstance, added the statement.
