- Tata Technologies notified India’s Stock Exchange about an attack
- He says it was a ransomware attack, but he didn’t share more details.
- The investigation is still ongoing, but the operations are in operation
Tata Technologies has revealed that he suffered a ransomware attack that paralyzed parts of his IT operation.
In a notification sent to the National Stock Exchange of India, the company said that “she realized” a ransomware incident that affected some of its IT assets.
“As a precautionary measure, some of IT services were temporarily suspended and now they have been restored,” said the company in the letter. “Our customer delivery services have remained completely functional and not affected at all times.”
Aimed at large Indian companies
Apart from that, the letter does not say much. Therefore, we do not know who the attackers were, how they managed to enter the infrastructure of Tata Technologies, or how much of the company’s network affected the attack. The letter suggests that the company does not know it yet and that it is investigating it:
“A more detailed investigation is being carried out in consultation with experts to evaluate the root cause and take corrective measures as necessary,” said Tata.
Nor do we know if the criminals took a confidential company or client data (as usual in ransomware attacks), or how long they lived before implementing the encrypper.
Tata Technologies is part of the massive Indian conglomerate Tata Group, counting more than 100 companies in a wide range of industries. As such, it is an important objective for all types of cybercriminals, and approximately two years ago, the hive ransomware hit Tata Power, the largest integrated electricity company in India. At that time, the company did not describe it as a ransomware attack, although it was forced to restore its systems.
“The detailed attack in the registered future report was one of the various intrusion attempts on Indian critical infrastructure since 2020, with the most recent attack assets confirmed in October 2022,” Microsoft said at that time.
It was said that Tata Power did not pay the rescue demand.
