Ted Cruz and other Senate Republicans question Trump’s tariffs

Some Republican senators in Capitol Hill, including one of the most burning supporters of President Trump, have indicated their concern to the radical global tariffs that the president announced this week and sent a staggering of global markets.

Senator Ted Cruz, a Texas Republican, warned Friday that a future in which other countries slapped reprisal rates on US goods, as China has done, was a “very real possibility” and would be a “terrible result” for the country.

“It’s terrible to the United States,” Cruz said in the last episode of his podcast. “I would destroy jobs here at home and do real damage to the US economy if we had tariffs everywhere.”

Mr. Cruz also said that a commercial war would probably push inflation and load consumers with greater costs.

“I love President Trump. I am his strongest defender in the Senate,” Cruz said. “But here there is one thing to understand: a tariff is a tax, and it is a tax mainly to US consumers.”

Mr. Cruz’s comments occurred only two days after the Senate, in a large symbolic movement, he voted to stop 25 percent of the encumbrances in Canada. However, it is almost certain that the bill will die in the Chamber, and even if it does not, Trump is unlikely to sign it.

Cruz was not among the Republican senators who joined all Democrats to boost the bill. They were Senator Lisa Murkowski from Alaska, Senator Susan Collins de Maine and Senators Rand Paul and Mitch McConnell, both from Kentucky.

On Thursday, another superior republican senator, Chuck Grassley of Iowa, associated with a Democrat to present a bill with the aim of claiming the authority of the Congress on the implementation of tariffs.

The bill, which Mr. Grassley copatrocinated with Senator Maria Cantwell, a Washington Democrat, would require the president to notify 48 hours in advance of any new tariffs. The Congress would have to approve those rates within 60 days, or would expire. Mr. Cruz was not co -spot.
