Tesla faces mounting legal pressure as new Autopilot lawsuit alleges design defect

Two Las Vegas residents have filed a lawsuit against Tesla.

The car company’s Autopilot system allegedly swerved the vehicle directly into oncoming traffic, causing a collision.

Residents named Simen Ghassan Shamoun and Steven Shamoun are demanding a jury trial in Clark County Court, claiming that Tesla’s driver assistance technology was defective when the incident occurred on April 1, 2026.

The system is alleged to have taken control without warning and veered into the oncoming lane, causing an accident and resulting in medical bills of more than $13,000 and $10,000, respectively.

The complaint also cited critical product liability, design defects and failure to warn. The system also indicates gross negligence and breach of warranty.

So far, Tesla has not issued any public response. However, based on the company’s past history, it has a pattern of rejecting comments on pending litigation.

This Las Vegas lawsuit case comes at a time when there is increased interest in Tesla’s driver-assistance technologies.

In a completely different case that occurred in Vacaville, California, on March 25, a driver was found asleep at the wheel of an autonomous vehicle made by Tesla. The driver was later arrested on DUI charges.

Critics also claimed that Tesla’s marketing used names such as “Autopilot” and “Full Self-Driving,” creating the misconception that the system does not need any active human supervision.
