- Tesla Robotaxis is in operation in Texas, Austin
- Most online reactions have been positive so far
- You can only get trips with special invitations for now
It has been a great wait, but the Tesla Robotaxi service has now been launched in a limited way, transporting its first passengers by Austin, Texas, with fully automated autonomous technology and without human taxi drivers.
The news was announced in several social networks channels, including @Ttesla_AI, and follows years of tests and teasing of Tesla and its CEO Elon Musk. However, it is a very limited launch for now: it must be invited to try the service, and only covers a specific part of Austin, a region that has been completely mapped by Tesla software.
While there is no human driver, each Robotaxi comes with a Tesla employee sitting in the passenger seat, ready to close the car if he gets into trouble.
The trips are charged to a fixed rate of $ 4.20 (around £ 3.15 / au $ 6.60), with everything managed through the Tesla application. Musk has said that the service will expand to other cities and reach the milestone of 1,000 vehicles in the coming months. So, while it is good to see the launch of the service, I will be on my shelf Groom Dreams for a while still.
Here is my experience in one of the first night walks @TESLA ROBOTAXI. It was soft, comfortable and as good as it is during the day. pic.twitter.com/7BDVVAWF3AJune 23, 2025
There is also a new Robotaxi page on the Tesla website, which gives service details. Tesla is betting on the Robotaxi service as a future income flow, and there have even been indications that Tesla owners will eventually rent their cars as robotaxis, earning money while otherwise they are not used.
For now, however, the service is far behind Waymo, which was launched in San Francisco three years ago, and also operates in Austin, Los Angeles and Phoenix. Waymo taxis do not have a personnel member present in the car, but all vehicles are controlled remotely in case of any problem.
Positive reactions, and some problems
Most Robotaxi reactions that reach social networks have been very positive: the service apparently works very well, both during the day and at night, with a soft passenger experience that, according to reports, exceeds what Waymo is offering.
However, it is worth noting that most people who have been invited to use Robotaxi’s trips are owners, supporters and investors of Tesla. He see the social networks accounts of people who positively publish on their Robotaxi walks, and you will see that there is a lot of pro-field feeling.
Tesla Robotaxi leaves us in In-N-Out, deals with the crosswalk and impulse through the line/traffic. He handled it perfectly. 🍔 pic.twitter.com/mgkiifm2gsJune 22, 2025
The best technology feels like magic because it is so normal that you don’t even notice … until you do it. He took a walk in a Tesla Robotaxi today. That is not a reason to rule out these reactions, but it is an important context. One of the clips that circulate shows a robotaxi trying to deviate in the wrong lane, which is prevented from doing. A clip published in Reddit, meanwhile, shows problems with unnecessary braking, although it seems that Robotaxi railings are working.
Now there are many extended videos that show attractions in robotaxis, without obvious problems or problems. At the moment, trips between 6 am and midnight can be acclaimed, and the Tesla application is responsible for synchronizing data such as music playlists from passenger phones to vehicles.
If you want to read more positivity around Tesla Robotaxi, go to Elon Musk’s feeding in X, you will see phrases like “Smooth as Butter” and even “the beginning of the subsequent civilization of driving.” There are many technological and regulatory obstacles to overcome as Tesla’s Robotaxi service grows, but now it is at least operational.
