A Congressman from Texas is asking the federal government to consider installing automatic cryptocurrency cashiers in federal buildings as a way to help foster the position of Pro Digital Assets promoted by President Donald Trump.
Representative Lance Gooden asked the Head of the General Services Administration, the agency that maintains the buildings and real estate of the government, which seeks to put the automated cashiers in those facilities as a “signal for the public that the Government is adopting innovation in a safe and responsible way,” according to a Thursday letter reviewed by Coindesk.
“Expand accessibility to cryptographic automatic ATMs within federal buildings aligns with the vision of President Trump to position the United States as a world leader in cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology,” he said.
The GSA already houses some traditional ATMs in some of its facilities, according to its website.
The letter asked GSA’s interim administrator, Stephen Ehikian, reviewing the viability of executing the proposal in a way that includes “clear guidelines for the installation and operation of automatic cryptography ATMs, focusing on robust identity verification measures and transparency in transaction fees.”
This proposal lands as the devices have attracted attention for its use in scams, inspiring Senator Dick Durbin, a Democrat from Illinois, to promote the Cryphip ATM fraud prevention law that would give limits to large transactions. And New Jersey is weighing a new bill that would require automatic cashiers to warn users about possible scams and provide a live customer service.
At least one of the ATM operators, Bitcoin Depot, reported last month that the transactions and income of the machines decreased, even as the Bitcoin trade (BTC) grew during the recent increase in the price.
The Assignments of the Gooden Committee do not put it in direct contact with the cryptographic legislation that currently moves through Congress, although the Stand With Crypto defense group has given it a “one” rating for the kindness of the industry. As a first -year congressman in 2019, Gooden was co -author of a bill to declare that the stable administered should be regulated by the Bag and Securities Commission, but more recently, it co -crocked legislation that opposed a digital currency (CBDC) of the US Central Bank.
