The Minister of State of the Interior Senator, Talal Chaudhary, announced on Monday that the Border Police (FC) is being restructured and renowned as the Federal Police to improve the internal and national security of Pakistan.
Speaking at a press conference together with the commander of FC Riaz Nazir Gara, he clarified that the renewal of the FC is not politically motivated but an institutional need.
Chaudhary emphasized that restructuring is only a defense -related initiative designed to strengthen national security by providing greater support for law enforcement agencies.
“For almost a century, the FC has played a crucial role in the maintenance of peace and order within the country and throughout its borders. However, it has not been given recognition or benefits comparable to other security forces,” he said.
Despite limited wages and less privileges, FC personnel have constantly demonstrated unwavering dedication, he said. “Now, under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, the Government has decided to transform the FC into a federal force, addressing long -standing disparities with an improved structure and an expanded scope.”
The minister clarified that while the name will change, the central function and the identity of the force as a police will remain intact. The restructuring will ensure that FC personnel receive salaries, training and benefits with other national security forces.
Chaudhary highlighted the long-standing role of the FC in the fight against drug trafficking, smuggling and the help of the Civil Police during the key national events, including Muharram, elections and anti-political campaigns. He confirmed that these tasks would continue under the new federal framework.
As part of the reforms, the jurisdiction of the Federal Police will be extended to cover the four provinces, as well as Gilgit-Baltist and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
The recruitment will be open to all Pakistani citizens, and the Federal Government will assume a total operational and financial responsibility, relieveing the provinces of any budget load.
The renewal will also include updated training modules, capacity construction initiatives and a modernized command structure aimed at improving morality and operational effectiveness.
The FC Gara commander provided a historical context, noting that the FC was originally established in 1913 as the Northwest Police of the border, under a law that now has more than a century of age.
“Recognizing the need for a reform, the force is now realized in a stronger institution by the federal government with clearly defined command levels: dishes, companies and wings,” he said. He added that 41 total wings, 36 are currently implemented under the security division. The new structure aims to optimize these units for better efficiency.
Commander Gara also honored the sacrifice of FC personnel, revealing that 423 members have established their lives in the fulfillment of duty. He said that reorganization would honor these sacrifices through better command systems, improved facilities and clearer professional traces.
Both Chaudhary and Gara urged the public, the media and interested parties to carefully review the new ordinance governing the Federal Police to avoid erroneous concepts.
“This transformation represents a strategic and institutional reform that will improve the operational capacity of one of the agencies for the application of the country’s oldest law,” they concluded.
