The legendary Basketball Coach Gregg Popovich announced Friday that he will resign as chief coach of the San Antonio Spurs and will make the full -time transition to the president of basketball operations.
The announcement followed Popovich’s absence for most of the 2024 season after what the team Previously called a slight blow.

“While my love and my passion for the game remain, I have decided that it is time to get away as a chief coach,” Popovich said in a statement on Friday afternoon. “I am always grateful to the wonderful players, coaches, personal and fans who allowed me to serve as a coach of the Spurs and I am excited about the opportunity to continue supporting the organization, the community and the city that are very significant for me.”

Popovich’s mandate comes to an end after a race of almost three decades that saw him train the Spurs to five NBA Championships He is still the leader of the victories of all the time of the League and has the greatest amount of victories in the playoffs with a team of any coach in the history of the NBA. His career, which also included being appointed coach of the NBA year three times and an Olympic gold medal, earned him a place in the Hall of Fame in 2023.

“The extraordinary impact of pop coach on our family, San Antonio, the Spurs and the basketball game is deep,” said Spurs managing partner Peter J. Holt, in a statement. “His praise and awards do not do justice to the impact he has had on so many people. He is really one as a person, leader and coach. All our family, along with fans around the world, are grateful for their remarkable 29 -year -old career as chief coach of the San Antonio Spurs.”

Popovich lost all but five games last season after suffering a stroke in the team’s sand on November 2. The assistant coach Mitch Johnson took over thereafter. The 76 -year -old coach has not spoken publicly since the incident, but went to the team in February, where he said he can “return to training in the future.”

However, last month, Popovich supposedly suffered a medical incident while having dinner at a restaurant.
Popovich will remain with the Spurs as president of the team, a role he has played since 1994. In 1996, he fired Bob Hill and designated the coach, a title he also had for 29 seasons.
