Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and former Punjab Prime Minister Hamza Shehbaz have been acquitted in the case of corruption of Ramzan Sugar Mills.

The National Responsibility Office (NAB) had presented a reference against the two political figures, accusing them of corruption about the construction of the drain system in 2015.

Shehbaz Sharif was arrested in October 2018, while Hamza was arrested in June 2019. Later, the Superior Court of Lahore granted them the bond.

Appearing before the Anti -Corruption Court, the plaintiff Zulfiqar Ali told Judge Sardar Muhammad Iqbal that he did not file the complaint against the sharifs or was aware of the request in which the case began.

“Withdraw this application,” he said. Given this, the judge ordered Ali to present a affidavit confirming his position.

Subsequently, Ali presented the affidavit, reiterating that he had no participation in the case. In his statement, he said that he did not know the content of the complaint, he had not signed any application and had not known knowledge about the construction of the wastewater drain near Ramzan Sugar Mills, which is in the heart of the case.

“I have no objection if Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shehbaz Sharif are acquitted,” Ali said in his affidavit.

The judge asked if the plaintiff’s statement had been registered above, to which Ali responded negative.
