The CPNE panel discusses press freedom


The Permanent Committee of the Council of Pakistan newspapers (CPNE) deliberated on Saturday about the challenges to the freedom of the press, the arbitrary use of the Law of Prevention of Electronic Crimes (PECA), the practice of linking government ads with favorable coverage and the growing distinction between professional and professionals of the media self -stated.

The members throughout the country supported a resolution presented by Ali Ahmed Dhillon, urging the Government to ensure that FIR is initiated or under -sin action against any journalist without prior consultation with the media agencies or the revision of a neutral committee.

On Friday, the Minister of Information, Attaullah Tarar, praised the role of the media to counteract the Indian narratives during the recent Pakistan-Indian conflict, describing the period as “extraordinary circumstances.”

He stressed that Pakistan’s strength was not in numbers or resources but in “having the truth.” “The truth cannot hide or be counteracted,” he said.

The senior member, Dr. Jabbar Khattak, emphasized the need for an ethics code for CPNE members to guarantee self-account. He added that information without restrictions on information was essential to combat the threat of false news.

The meeting was attended by CPNE, Kazim Khan, Senior Vice President Ayaz Khan, Secretary General Ghulam Nabi Chandio and other officers.
