- Bakalova’s comments come after the blood-soaked season 1 finale, which Ilana was involved in.
Maria Bakalova has expressed her desire to continue playing Princess Ilana in the DC Universe (DCU), although it is incredibly unlikely that the character will return.
Speaking exclusively to TechRadar before Creature commands‘ At the end of season 1, Bakalova admitted that she was not ready to say goodbye to the future monarch of Pokolistan. However, given what happens in the seventh episode of season 1, titled ‘A Very Funny Monster,’ Bakalova’s desire to continue playing Ilana seems like a pipe dream.
Full spoilers follow immediately for Creature commands season 1 episode 7!
In the final minutes of this season’s final episode, which you can read about in more detail at Creature commands Article explained from the end of season 1, Ilana is murdered in cold blood by The Bride. Minutes earlier, Ilana had carried out her own murder, and the member of the Pokolistan royal family killed Nina Mazursky, also known as one of the members of the titular team and the closest thing The Bride had to a friend. As Baklova told me, Ilana ended Nina’s life “to protect herself” after Nina attempted to assassinate Ilana under the instructions of ARGUS head and Task Force M manager Amanda Waller.
Very well, but why was the group of the same name given the task of killing Ilana? Remember, in the fourth episode of the Max series, the Amazonian sorceress Circe warned Waller, as a premonition, that Ilana wanted to conquer the planet Earth and turn Pokolistan into a tyrannical global superpower.
That plot twist in episode 4, which also sees the DCU’s Justice League revealed for the first time (albeit killed at the hands of Pokolistan’s military), completely changed viewers’ perception of Ilana. It’s a moment that Bakalova previously told me was “an interesting reveal” for Ilana’s evolution as a character, which is an understated way of describing Ilana’s turn.
Unfortunately, it seems we will never know why Ilana had plans to take over the world, nor what led her to be such a diabolical individual. That being said, characters from comics and their multimedia adaptations (DC or not) tend to come back to life in some form. So there’s no reason why Ilana can’t return, even if it’s in a flashback sequence in the recently announced Creature commands season 2 or another DCU Chapter One project.
That is the hope Bakalova clings to. In fact, when I asked borat 2 and Marvel star (she voiced Cosmo in Guardians of the Galaxy 3) If there was ever a situation, through a previous script or a conversation with DC Studios co-head James Gunn, in which her femme fatale turned would-be dictator could have survived, Bakalova confirmed that was not the case . However, she hasn’t given up hope of voicing Ilana again in the future.
“I’m going to be completely transparent,” Bakalova said. “I want her to exist in the future. As an actor, I want to continue playing this role and I’m really interested to see how the audience reacts to it.” [Ilana’s death]. If viewers want to see more of her, maybe that’s a reason to talk about it. [her return] and if not, maybe I just have to stay still! “We make these shows for the people, so it’s important to hear their opinions.”
As for what Bakalova would like to explore if one of the most notable original characters from Max’s best series returns in some capacity, the actor said: “I want to know how he ended up being who he is today, why he wants to destroy the world and why does she want so much power? What drives someone to have such evil dreams about world domination? What drove her, in her early life, to become such a monster?
“At the end of the day, she’s the biggest monster of everyone on the show,” he continued. “The Creature Commandos are monsters by circumstance or appearance. Ilana is a beautiful, seemingly innocent human who commits monstrous acts of violence. Why? I’d like to know in the future, so if James ever asked me , for her to return, whether for an episode, a full season, or even just a cameo, I would just want my badass princess to already be back from the dead!
