Insta360 CEO Liu Jingkang dropped something of a bombshell at the company’s annual conference this week by unveiling the Insta360 Luna, the company’s first pocket-size gimbal camera. Liu emphasized that the device is “definitely not another pocket camera,” which tells us exactly what Insta360 has in its sights: DJI’s wildly popular Osmo Pocket series of stabilized vlogging cameras.
Luna, which will arrive in the first half of 2026, enters a market that DJI has dominated for years. But rather than simply mimicking the formula that made the Osmo Pocket 3 a success, Insta360 appears to be taking a different tack, focusing on a dual-camera setup.

Two cameras are better than one
Yes, the most obvious difference between the Luna and the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 is right there on the former’s face: it has two cameras instead of one. This dual-lens design opens up some interesting performance possibilities. I say “intriguing” because, well, we don’t know exactly how the two-camera setup will work.
Insta360 hasn’t revealed full specs yet, but if I’m speculating, the dual-lens setup suggests potential for better depth sensing, better subject tracking, and creative shooting modes that simply aren’t possible with a single camera. It’s worth noting that the rumored specs for the upcoming DJI Osmo Pocket 4 suggests it will launch with a single camera module, and that a dual-camera “Pro” version could arrive later.

If Luna comes to market first with dual cameras out of the box, it’s a real plus in the features department, and could appeal to content creators looking for something beyond the standard vlogging camera formula.
Beyond the dual cameras, the Luna seems set to adopt a modular design philosophy that contrasts with DJI’s more rigidly integrated approach. Previous leaks on The New Camera suggest interchangeable components and batteries, which could make Luna more adaptable over time, although I’ll have to see the final product to judge whether this adds genuine value or simply complexity. I would also expect the wireless Insta360 Mic Air to be fully compatible with Luna, in the same way that the DJI Mic series works with the Pocket series.
Can Insta360 compete with DJI’s empire?
Insta360 is entering a market where DJI is the undisputed ruler. The Pocket series is loved by vloggers and content creators for good reasons: refined stabilization, excellent image quality, and a mature ecosystem of accessories.
The Luna is expected to be priced between $499 and $699 (£370 to £515), and should be competitively priced against the Pocket 3 and rumored Pocket 4. But price alone won’t win this battle; Insta360 will also need to deliver stabilization performance, image quality and software polish, areas where DJI’s years of refinement really count.
That said, Insta360 is not without its advantages. The company has proven it can compete with DJI in similar markets (and already sells excellent gimbal-mounted stabilized cameras; they’re just webcams rather than handheld devices), and DJI’s ongoing regulatory challenges in the US have created uncertainty for some buyers. If Luna offers impressive dual-camera features and integrates seamlessly into the Insta360 ecosystem, I think it could appeal to both first-time buyers and creators looking for an alternative to the DJI Pocket series.
Competition is healthy and can’t hurt consumers if the Insta360 shakes up a category that’s been relatively quiet since the arrival of the Pocket 3. Whether its dual cameras prove to be a game-changer or just a gimmick will depend on execution, something I’ll only know once a review unit hits my desk.
For now, vloggers and content creators have an interesting choice before them: stick with the proven DJI Pocket formula, wait and see what the Pocket 4 brings, or take a chance with Insta360’s two-eyed challenger.
