- Macos 16 (or macOS 26) could leave support for some Intel Macs
- Rumors suggest that these will include my MacBook Pro 2018
- But it is likely not the end of the road for all Mac with Intel still
My reliable Macbook Pro 2018 has served me over the years, processing thousands of photos and more without complaints, but the last rumors of macOS 16 suggest that their days are, like most Mac with Intel, very numbered.
WWDC 2025 is now just a few days away and, according to an Apple Insider report, Macos 16, or Macos 26 Tahoe, as it seems to be named, will launch support for many Intel Mac models, including the minos (Olfates).
Apple Insider says that “the people familiar with the matter” have told him that only the macs listed below will be able to run macos 16. Notable for their absence are the MacBook Pro 2018, 2020 MacBook Air, IMAC Pro and 2018 Mac Mini, all of which currently admit the current sequoia macOS.
- Macos compatibility list 26 rumored
- MacBook Pro 2019 or posterior
- MacBook Air M1 or posterior
- IMAC 2020 or posterior
- Mac Pro 2019 or posterior
- Mac Mini M1 or posterior
- Mac Studio
There are two other things to take into account about this list. One is that, if it is really necessary when Apple announces macos 26 on June 9, it would not yet mark a significant ending for all Macs with Intel.
Macbook Pro, 2020 5K IMAC 2019 and Mac Pro 2019 to 2026. Next year, Macos 27 may presumably become the first desktop operating system to exclusively admit the Mac of Apple Silicon, which would be a great moment if so.
Second, those four Mac with Intel that are apparently in the cutting block for macos 26 would not necessarily be obsolete. Apple generally continues to provide another two years of safety updates only for machines in that position, so I would not necessarily have to say goodbye to my Macbook Pro 2018.
And yet, Macos 26 will probably be the excuse I’ve been looking for to do that …
My next MacBook
Moving to an Apple Silicon Macbook has been on my desire list for some years, but buying one is not exactly a challenge of $ 20. Even so, if Apple announces on June 9 that my MacBook Pro 2018 is not invited to Tahoe’s party, it is likely that it is the thrust to make the jump, the other is that my Macbook is now showing his age.
There are all regular seven -year laptop signals, such as needing to be constantly connected to a charger and the fan that overwhelms the most mere indication of anything more demanding than three Chrome tabs. And yes, it also has the tactile bar very defamated, which I liked despite the fact that it is largely useless.
But it really is an edition of photos and videos where my Macbook Pro is showing its advance years. The AI AI Ai Ai Ai Reduction of Lightroom, for example, is very impressive, but applying it to a photo can take several minutes and makes the base of my laptop feel hot enough to cook a meat dinner.
It is likely that the question for me is to obtain a 13 -inch M4 macbook air or wait for the M5 MacBook Pro, which is expected to land at the end of this year along with m5 chips (possibly in “Autumn” of 2025, according to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg).
With the first sitting at the top of our guide to the best laptops (and the best list of MacBook and Macs) and probably offering everything I will need (liquid retinal screen with color range P3, 10 -core Apple m4 chip and battery 1,699. Which will somehow double when I add more RAM and storage.
There are also rumors that Macbook Pro M5 of this year could be a slightly disappointing update. It is likely that real fireworks come with a redesigned macbook that has been inclined to land in 2026 with an OLED exhibition, at least with rumors.
So, although my tired MacBook Pro 2018 is not yet completely obsolete, the change to a macbook with M4 motor would probably feel like a difference in night and day, and now they are quite rare.
