- Despite generating the majority of the traffic, the tech giants will not be held responsible according to DNA.
- They will continue to cooperate in a voluntary best practice regime.
- Could this be a response to threats from the US government?
Big tech companies such as Google, Meta, Netflix, Microsoft and Amazon will not face strict new regulations under the Commission’s upcoming Digital Networks Act (DNA), despite lobbying by telecoms companies, according to a new report. PakGazette report.
Despite generating huge amounts of internet traffic, telcos will remain the key target of Europe’s DNA, with Big Tech following a voluntary framework of best practices.
As a result, Big Tech will not face new legal obligations, but its cooperation will be monitored by the European telecommunications regulator, BEREC. “There will be no new obligations. It will be a best practice regime,” a person familiar with the matter was quoted as saying. PakGazette explained.
Big Tech Won’t Face DNA Law Enforcement
Henna Virkkunen, vice president of the European Commission for Technological Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, will formally present the Digital Networks Law on January 20, framing it as an opportunity to boost Europe’s competitiveness and increase investment in telecommunications infrastructure.
More negotiations are expected between EU member states and the bloc’s Parliament before the DNA becomes law, but in essence it will focus on modernizing networks by phasing out copper in favor of full fiber networks. Unsurprisingly, attention is also being paid to strengthening cybersecurity on critical networks, including undersea cables.
Still, reports that Big Tech will be immune from additional regulations are very pertinent. Companies such as Apple, Meta and Google have faced serious fines from European regulators over the past year, with the Trump administration accusing the EU of pursuing “discriminatory and harassing lawsuits” against American companies.
The United States even threatened to use “every tool at its disposal” to counter Europe’s enforcement of the law.
However, Europe’s DNA still has political overtones, and upcoming plans are designed to help Europe catch up with American and Chinese networks.
