Christopher Wong, a former special supervision agent of the FBI and a leading figure in the agency cryptocurrency investigations, has joined the intelligence firm of Blockchain TRM Labs.
“Chris is not only one of the most talented and respected researchers in the world, he is also an inspiring colleague that improves all those around him,” said Ari Redbord, head of the global TRM Labs policy, Coindesk. “It has been a critical part of elite teams throughout their career, and now brings that same excellence to our TRM mission.”
During his ten years with the FBI, Wong worked in some of the cases of cryptometric ones at high risk to date. He compensated for research on the 2016 Bitfinex Hack, which resulted in the largest cryptographic seizure in the history of the United States: $ 3.6 billion.
He also played a central role in the investigation of the violation of the Axie Infinity Ronin bridge of $ 600 million, which was linked to the Lázaro Group of North Korea. The attack caused the first US sanctions to cryptography mixing services and helped redefine how US agencies responded to cyber threats that involve cryptography.
One of the last main cases of Wong with the FBI consisted of tracking $ 7.7 million in cryptographic linked to North Korea’s Washing schemes. Their efforts revealed how agents falsified their identities to win jobs in the global technology industry, then the profits to Pyongyang were directed.
Wong now joins TRM Labs as a global researcher, with the aim of helping to interrupt cryptonal cryptographic activity.
“I hope to learn from Chris, as it helps our clients and partners prevent illicit actors from exploiting transformative technologies,” said Redbord.
