The long -awaited Islamabad model jail is in operation in three phases, and the first phase is expected to begin at the end of August.

The second phase will conclude within 90 days before October 31, while the final phase is scheduled for completion before December 31, 2025. Once the first phase is completed, between 200 and 300 inmates will be transferred from Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail to the new model in Islamabad. It is likely that former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who has been imprisoned in Adial prison during the last two years.

The Islamabad model prison is being built in 90 acres in the H-16/2 sector of the Federal Capital. Initially estimated at RS3.9 billion, the cost of the project has now been globalized up to more than 18.2 billion due to persistent delays and a strong increase in the prices of construction materials.

Designed to house 2,000 inmates and bass prisoners, the installation includes large barracks for women and juvenile detainees. The prison also has a school for children, a 22 -bed hospital for inmates and personal, a mosque, an imambargah, a church, a library and an auditorium.

A large kitchen capable of preparing meals for 2,000 to 3,000 people has also been equipped with roti manufacturing machines. The installation area has increased from 869,621 to 914,329 square feet.
Although the project was originally proposed in 2007, the construction only began after the funds were assigned in the 2016-17 budget.

Initially planned as a 36 -month project that will be completed in 2019, it stagnated due to fund cuts. The work resumed at a faster rate from July 1 of this year. Two regular barracks and a special barracks have been completed, together with the Security Control Posts and the Central Surveillance Tower, which are currently in final works that are expected to end within a week.

For the installation to work, the Interior Ministry has requested 288 police personnel, including 8 inspectors, 5 assistant sub -inspectors, 25 head agents and 250 agents. These officers are expected to be delivered to the Islamabad prison administration before August 14.

The appointment of the first prison Superintendent, Deputy Superintendent and Superintendent Assistant is also expected in mid -August. While the model jail will help alleviate overcrowding in the Adiala jail, it will not completely solve the problem. The Adial prison has a capacity of 3,500, but currently houses up to 7,500 inmates and subdironos prisoners. Even if 2,000 are relocated, the installation is likely to be filled quickly.

Preparations for the launch of the pilot phase are in full swing, with daily progress reports that are sent to the Ministry of Interior. Multiple departments are working 24 hours to meet the deadlines. New special prison trucks are also being provided, and the recruitment process for doctors and hospital staff will begin in the first week of August.

Islamabad became a fully functional capital in 1967. After a 58 -year wait, its first prison will now be activated in 2025.
