- Andrew Ferguson accuses Gmail of having “partisan” spam filters
- Google said the filters “apply equally … regardless of political ideology”
The president of the FTC, Andrew Ferguson, accused Google of Filterado de Spam de Gmail “partisan” that discriminates certain political parties.
In a letter to the CEO of Alphabet, SUCTAR PICHAI, dated August 28, 2025, Ferguson said that the emails for the collection of Republican funds are being marked as spam, while democratic emails continue to be delivered successfully.
Ferguson warned that this could violate the prohibition of unfair or misleading commercial practices of the FTC law, suggesting that an investigation and possible application could be on the cards.
Gmail went once again through the political email filtering
“I understand that recent reports report is that Gmail spam filters prevent messages from routinely reaching consumers when these messages come from republican senders, but do not block similar messages sent by the Democrats,” summarizes Ferguson.
The complaint cites a New York Post The article, which revealed that the identical emails with Winred donation links (Republicans) and Actblue (Democrat) were treated differently by Gmail.
Google has already responded to these accusations previously, with the company’s spokesman, José Castáañeda, said: “There are email filter protections to keep our insurance users.”
Filters “apply also to all senders, regardless of political ideology.”
“The right of a consumer to listen to candidates or parties, including donation requests, does not decrease because consumer political preferences can be higher than the political preferences of their company or their employees,” Ferguson wrote.
This is not the first time that Google has been accused of political bias in its Filtrado de Spam de Gmail. In 2022, a demand for RNC said that the company had unfairly leaked Republican emails, but the United States District Court dismissed the case due to lack of evidence. RNC has revived the case since then.
