The San Francisco giants fired veteran manager Bob Melvin one day after the regular 2025 MLB season ended.
Melvin’s 2026 option was collected in July, but the giants chose to move in a different direction.
San Francisco finished 81-81 this year, floating to the edge of the Playoffs containment. Despite an increase of 13-3 in August, the club hesitated in September and left the race.

“After a careful evaluation, we determined that making a change in leadership was the best for the team,” Buster Posey, president of Giant Baseball Operations, said on Monday, through ESPN. “The last months have been disappointing and frustrating for all of us, and we do not do our standards. We now focus on identifying a new leader to guide us forward.
“I’m just looking to find a different voice that can take us in a different direction.”

Melvin acknowledged after the 4-0 victory that ended the San Francisco season that had no guarantees about the return, although his option was exercised.
Giants are expected to move quickly to ensure a new manager. A rumored candidate is Bruce Bochy, the former Posey pattern in San Francisco, who has just completed three seasons with the Texas Rangers.

“We talk a lot about that, what are the standards for giants, and we have high standards,” Posey said. “And I keep those same standards. I completely understand the position in which I am now. My work and the success of the team are also evaluated accordingly. Without a doubt, hope there may be consistency in these leadership positions. We have to return to a place where we are in the playoffs, we are doing runs in the playoffs. That is what our fans base deserves, that is what the city deserves.”
Posey refused to put a timeline in hiring. “I want to make sure to do it well,” he said.
Melvin’s extensive curriculum means that he could land elsewhere quickly. Three times manager of the year in both leagues, he has a 1,678-1,588 professional record in 22 seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Seattle Mariners, Oakland Athletics, San Diego Padres and Giants.
It was 161-163 in two seasons with San Francisco.

“I feel extremely grateful to be able to play for him, and he is the same guy every day,” said the third base Matt Chapman. “It has been stable for us, it is always honest with the players, it supports us. He has done the best with what we have given him. The players, many of us probably do not play with our abilities.”
