The Minister of Industries and Production, Rana Tanveer Hussain, said that sugar prices will not be able to increase during Ramadan, according to Pakistan radio.
President of a meeting to review sugar prices in Islamabad on Friday, he said that providing relief to consumers during Ramadan is the government’s responsibility.
Hussain said that sugar mills have received a time for a week to consult about sugar prices and the final rates of the product will be announced on Thursday.
The minister said that farmers should be included in profits and that sugar mills must play their role in addressing the production and financial problems of farmers.
Earlier this week, the Public Services Stores Corporation (USC) increased the price of sugar in RS5 per kilogram. According to sources, the price of sugar in public service stores has increased from RS140 to RS145 per kilogram.
The decision to increase the price was taken due to the increase in prices in the open market. However, despite this increase, sugar in public service stores remains cheaper than in the open market.
