- A second trailer for Ave Maria Project has been released
- A great surprise from history is given.
- The new science fiction film opens in theaters on March 20, 2026
A new trailer for the long-awaited science fiction film Ave Maria Project has been released, but it reveals a major story spoiler.
Adapted from Andy Weir’s novel of the same name, the new film will see Ryan Gosling playing Ryland Grace, a science teacher who wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of who he is or how he got there.
Such a mysterious initial premise means that the story unfolds piece by piece as Grace slowly regains his memory about himself and, crucially, why he found himself on a spaceship light years from Earth.
While the big planet-saving mission she’s on isn’t something that’s hidden in the novel’s synopsis (Grace learns very quickly why she’s on a spaceship), there’s another key plot revelation that’s withheld until later in the story.
In fact, it’s not until you’re a quarter of the way through the book that you’re introduced to a new character who ends up becoming a crucial part of the entire quest. It’s an important plot reveal, as that’s when the story really starts to take direction.
while the first Ave Maria Project The trailer only showed glimpses of Ryan Gosling’s desperate mission to save the sun, the second one released today (November 18) contains an even broader look at the mysterious character, and that might mean you might want to skip it.
What does the second Hail Mary Project trailer reveal?
Spoiler warning! Go back now if you don’t want to spoil key plot elements. Ave Maria Project.
Look
For anyone who has read the book or doesn’t care about spoilers, the mysterious character I’m referring to above is an alien named Rocky that Grace meets in space and who ends up becoming one of the main protagonists of the entire story.
The introduction of the alien marks a crucial turning point in the narrative, raising the stakes of the mission to a whole new level. But while the book’s blurb and the movie’s plot hint at the possibility that Grace may not be alone or have an “unexpected friendship,” the first trailer revealed this detail instantly.
Sure, it was just a glimpse of said alien that was shown in the first official trailer (for anyone who wants to go back and watch it in the video below, skip to the two minute and 25 second mark), but it’s still a major plot reveal if you ask me.
Look
In fact, I thought it was such a significant detail to the story that I didn’t even mention it when I first covered the trailer, but Amazon MGM Studios has since confirmed that it won’t refrain from hiding the alien from the public with the release of the second official trailer.
The new trailer includes numerous clips taken from scenes with the alien, and these aren’t just brief glimpses of its limbs either. Throughout the three minute and four second trailer, there are several clips that give audiences a look at the alien’s full rock form.
Perhaps this is to appeal to fans of the book like me, who might also be interested in seeing how the spider-like alien ended up taking shape in the movie, or perhaps it’s to hook those unfamiliar with the story by seeing the alien creature at the center of it all. Whatever the reason, I still think the alien could have been prevented from sending marketing materials.
Maybe I’m in the minority, but acting out all the different scenarios a movie could take, only to be surprised by the direction it ends up taking or finally seeing the sets and costumes from a book come to life, is a big part of the enjoyment I get from watching a movie. Without this, the element of surprise is removed, which can make a story too predictable.
Amazon, MGM Studios and Sony may have brought back the late Don LaFontaine to make the trailer in typical ’80s style, where the entire plot is revealed through narration. To be clear, it’s not that bad, but I think our first look at the alien could have waited until the movie’s release.
At least it won’t be long until Ave Maria Project opens in theaters on March 20, 2026. Who else is counting down until we can reserve our IMAX tickets?
