Khanpur:
The water supply for the irrigation of the Khanpur dam on Wednesday has been suspended due to a significant decrease in water entry.
According to the sources of the dam, the current level of water has fallen to 1928.79 feet, well below the total storage capacity of the 1982 feet. The entry of water into the dam is in just 26 CUSECs, while the output has been recorded in 148 CUSEC, creating an imbalance that has required immediate conservation measures.
The officials confirmed that the suspension of the supply of irrigation water, now in force during the last three days, agrees with the established legal and operational protocols aimed at managing water resources during low -entry periods. The reduced entrance is attributed to changing climatic patterns and a lack of rain in the collection areas.
Despite the interruption in the supply of irrigation, the authorities have assured residents that the provision of drinking water to Rawalpindi and Islamabad remains uninterrupted. Maintaining water supply to twin cities has been prioritized to meet domestic consumption needs. The administration of the dam closely monitors the situation and is expected to resume the supply of irrigation once the input conditions improve. Farmers are recommended to trust the irrigation dam that adopt water conservation practices and explore alternative water sources during this temporal suspension.
The Khanpur dam, located on the Haro River, near Khanpur in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, plays a fundamental role in the water supply for agricultural and domestic use in the region.
