- Nucor confirmed suffering a cyber attack
- He was forced to close parts of his operations to contain the incident.
- There are no threat actors, responsibility was affirmed
Nucor, one of the largest steel manufacturers in the United States, was forced to close parts of its operations to address an ongoing cyber attack. The company confirmed the news in a new 8-K form presented to the United States Stock Exchange and Securities Commission (SEC).
In the presentation, Nucor said that he recently observed an “unauthorized third” that accesses “certain information technology systems.” When he saw the intrusion, he activated his incident response plan, brought a third -party cybersecurity company to help and notified the relevant law agencies.
However, it also took “potentially affected systems out of line” to implement “other measures of containment, remediation or recovery.”
Was it ransomware?
Nucor told the SEC that “temporarily and proactively” he stopped certain production operations in various places “in abundance of caution.” Now he is restarting those operations, he added.
In general, when a company closes its operations to contain a cyber attack, it generally ends up being a ransomware attack. While the company did not say it explicitly, the fact that it stopped operations could suggest that this is the case.
In addition, the registration tried to communicate with the company’s facilities around the USA. Sometimes, a ransomware attack also results in inaccessible telephone lines.
The importance that Nucor plays to support the critical infrastructure of the United States would also make it a main objective for ransomware attackers. There are no threat actors that have assumed responsibility yet, and we do not know if confidential data were taken in the violation.
Nucor is based in Charlotte, North Carolina, and is widely considered as the largest Us steel producer, and one of the main recyclers. It operates more than 300 facilities in the United States, Canada and Mexico, and manufactures a wide range of steel products. Last year, annual net sales of $ 30.73 billion reported.
