- New information about Nintendo Switch 2 has been leaked
- Suggests the name of the console could simply be “Nintendo Switch 2”
- It also backs up the claims for the magnetic Joy-Con controllers.
New leaked information about Nintendo Switch 2 could give us new details about the upcoming console.
As reported by The Verge, a Reddit user with the username ‘NextHandheld’ allegedly got his hands on a Nintendo Switch 2 retail unit. The outlet claims to have seen two photos that may verify this fact, one showing a possible dock for the Switch 2 and the other showing the console controller rail and stand hinge.
The user claims that the console could be announced in January. This would align with Nintendo’s earlier confirmation that a Switch successor will be announced “within this fiscal year,” meaning before March 31, 2025.
The image of the dock can also give us our first real idea of the brand of the system. It reportedly has a logo that looks similar to that of the original Nintendo Switch, albeit with the number two, suggesting it could be formally known as “Nintendo Switch 2.”
According to the Reddit user, the dock does not have more ports than its OLED counterpart on the Nintendo Switch. There are two USB-A connectors, an HDMI port, an Ethernet port, and a USB-C connector, presumably for power.
The photos also appear to confirm the long-standing rumor that the Nintendo Switch 2 controllers will be held in place by magnets. A large button on the back of the Joy-Con will be used to remove them. If you want an idea of what it could look like, third-party accessory company Dbrand recently shared a 3D render that could offer an early look at the handheld console.
On top of all this, the user also claims that the controllers will feature more durable Hall effect joysticks, finally eliminating the dreaded Joy-Con drift. There’s also the matter of the console’s revamped stand, which will supposedly be “U” shaped.
This is a huge amount of information, most of which seems quite plausible. Still, you should keep in mind that the source is still an anonymous Reddit account, and while they may have some compelling images, this is nowhere near a formal announcement, so take it with a grain of salt. We’ll have to wait for any official revelation to see if this latest set of claims is accurate.
