- Goal announced the new Instagram maps function, which has many users worried about their online privacy
- While the new feature is only opted, it has not prevented angry users from sharing their thoughts about X and Reddit
- If you are one of those users, there is a way to ensure that your location configuration is turned off for the new Instagram map
Instagram Maps is one of the latest additions to the application interface, and although it has only been a week since it was implemented, it has not left the best impression on users, including myself.
Together with a large number of other features, including a new tab of friends on the Reels page, Instagram Maps is a new function in the Messages section that allows you to share your real -time location with friends. It is very similar to Snap Maps, which has existed for almost eight years.
According to Meta’s announcement, Instagram Maps aims to provide ‘content to help you already your friends connect with the world around it’, whether seeing stories of a live music concert or finding a place of suspension of trends. The company has iterated that the new feature is ‘opted’ only and seems to be extinguished by default, but users are still far from being happy with it.
A new way of connecting or an invasion of privacy?
While it is obvious that this is another attempt to overcome Snapchat as the leading messaging service for younger users, it has not worked well in favor of Instagram. The main concern is the greatest risk to user safety, especially when it comes to harassment.
Reddit has been a hot point for people to vent their anger (see below), with a user who publishes “I wonder how many murders will help.”
Instagram has presented a new maps function that shows its location to others. And Internet users are furious for R/Technology
But what is this different from Snap maps, can you ask? Well, the main distinction that people are doing is that Snapchat is a more personal application, and Instagram is not.
In the case of Snapchat, the friends aggregate process is more discreet, since specific user names to add people, for the most part. While there is the function ‘Find friends’ and a search bar, your application must still be approved by another user before you can start messages from each other.
When it comes to Instagram, having a private account means that you can choose who follows it, but people with a public account can be followed by anyone. The search function also makes it easier to find people to follow and shows the complete account of a user if it is public, what Snapchat does not.
How to make sure that Instagram maps goes out
Whether it is an iOS or Android user, there is a way to ensure that its location is hidden from the new Instagram Maps function. As mentioned, the function is opted and extinguished by default, but this is how it can make sure it is completely disabled.
Open the Instagram application and go to the messages, where you will find the map at the top of your inbox. Touch, then select the configuration icon in the upper right, which will present different locations exchange options. You will want to select the ‘nobody’ marking, and then touch the update button to save.
