- Sigma minimalist BF is machined from a single piece of aluminum
- It has the Ligma L assembly and a 24MP full frame sensor with a 6K video
- There are only 230 GB of internal storage and there is no memory card slot
Sigma has clearly fun designing its new BF mirror without a mirror, stripping the user experience in the basics. It is made in Japan, but adopts the Scandinavian minimalist design and then the bet rises.
As Sigma writes, the BF is a “radically simple camera that evokes the essence of photography.” This is not a boring black box with a full frame sensor as we tend to get from Sony, Canon, Nikon and Panasonic: in fact it is something radically different, and respect for Sigma for its audacity, even if the BF could be easy in the Eye on practical in hand.
The BF must be as hard as they come: it is mechanized from a single piece of aluminum, a process that Sigma says it takes more than seven hours. It measures only 5.1 x 2.9 x 1.4in / 130.1 x 72.8 x 36.8 mm and inclines the scales at 15.7 Oz / 446 g (with battery), and accepts mounting lenses L, of which there are many, which makes it appropriate as a everyday camera
There are two colors to choose between: silver or black. Together with the Chamber, Sigma released silver versions of his I-Series of contemporary lenses to coincide with the appearance of the silver option. The camera list is $ 1,999 / £ 1,969, which is quite competitive taking into account the materials and crafts involved. We will update this article with the price of Australia when we obtain that information.
Within its elegant exterior, the Sigma BF houses a 24MP full frame sensor with 6K video capabilities and only an electronic shutter, there is no mechanical shutter. A scan of the camera characteristics suggests that Sigma BF is quite similar to the Panasonic Lumix S9, which is another compact camera without a mirror.
I tried the Lumix S9, and felt that Panasonic had made a commitment too much to the service of maintaining simple things so that it really enjoy its handling (even if a firmware update improved a little), and Sigma’s BF is intentionally simpler. I have not yet had my hands in the camera, but I have already developed some thoughts.
Is bold, exciting and limited
Two sigma lenses were also added to the collection
Next to the BF camera, Sigma released two lenses; The F4 DG operating system of 300-600 mm for full frame cameras and the F3.5-6.7 DC of 16-300 mm for APS-C cameras. The 300-600 mm professional lens costs $ 5,999 / £ 5,899, while 16-300 mm is the first mirror lens in the world with 18.8x optical zoom, and costs $ 699 / £ 599. Both lenses are sent in April. Again, the price of Australia is TB.
Completely respect that to create a radically simple camera, some features have to go. I am also writing as an experienced photographer who is accustomed to enjoying the number and variety of controls offered by complex cameras, even if a personal favorite is the wonderfully simple Hasselblad X2D 100c. But I can already feel that Sigma BF is a camera with which I will enjoy looking more than shooting.
For me, the challenge with the use of BF will be to compose images. There is no viewfinder, which is a great less for me since the BF is a photography camera first. This is aggravated by the DOT DOT screen of 2.15 inches of 2.1m, which is fixed: it cannot turn it or turn it for an easy visualization at uncomfortable angles.
These limitations are the price we pay for a radically minimalist chamber. Even so, I am intrigued by Sigma BF, and it could be one of the outstanding cameras of 2025. I love how their menus and controls are stripped of what you need most: there are only four buttons to access the basic exposure configuration and reproduction , all controlled with a finger, along with a small back screen that shows its most recent change. configuration. Watch Sigma’s YouTube video below to see more closely how controls work.
Around the sides and the lower part, there is only one loop for a wrist strap, a tripod support, a removable battery and a USB-C port; There are no other porticular ports and microphone inputs. This is as simple as it comes. In fact, there is not even a memory card slot, on the other hand, there are 230 GB of internal storage only.
I am not very important of any of those omissions, and I don’t care about that elegant front without grip. After all, this is a camera designed for small lenses and for daily photography.
For me, it is the lack of viewfinder and the fixed rear screen that are the treatment. What do you think of the new Sigma BF? Avise me in the comments below.
