Floods in the state of Nigeria in Niger this week killed 151 people and forced several thousand of their homes, an emergency official told Reuters on Saturday.

Ibrahim Audu Hussaini, Information Director of the Emergency Management Agency of the State of Niger, provided the new number of deaths, which was previously reported in 117 on Friday.

He added that more than 500 homes had been impacted and more than 3,000 displaced people.

The flood incident in the central city of Mokwa in the state of Niger occurred on Wednesday night and continued until Thursday morning. Days later, rescuers were still collecting mud and debris in search of bodies.

Nigeria is prone to floods during the rainy season, which began in April.

In 2022, the worst flood wave of the country in more than a decade killed more than 600 people, displaced around 1.4 million and destroyed 440,000 hectares (1.09 million acres) of farmland.
