An Olympic medalist died after being beaten by lightning.

Audun Groenvold, the Alpine athlete and the athlete of the ski cross, was beaten by a ray during a “cabin trip,” the Norwegian Ski federation announced Wednesday. He was 49 years old.

“With great sadness we have received the news of the premature death of Audun Groenvold,” said the Federation. “The former Alpine National Athlete and Ski Cross athlete was recently beaten by a ray during a cabin trip.”

The Federation said that Groenvold was “rapidly taken to the hospital and received treatment for the injuries he suffered in the lightning strike” and then died Tuesday night.

Groenvold was beaten by the Bolt on Saturday.

Groenvold was a member of the Norway Alpine ski team before moving to Freestyle and Ski Cross in 2004. He won a bronze medal at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver.

He had a podium as a alpine skier of the World Cup, ending third in a descent in Sierra Nevada, Spain, in 1999. He also won a bronze medal in Ski Cross in the 2005 World Championship, and the Cross Cross Cross General in 2007.

After his career ended, he became coach of the national team and television commentator.

“Norwegian skiing has lost a prominent figure, which has meant both for alpine and freestyle communities,” said the president of the Federation, Tove Moe Dyrhaug, adding that his death creates “a great emptiness.”

He competed in his first race at the age of 3 and obtained points of the Alpine Ski World Cup for the first time two months before his 21st birthday in 1996.

Groenvold competed in the free -style skiing World Cup throughout Europe, where he obtained three victories. Two of them reached a period of one month in 2007, and the other arrived in 2010. He also ended second for three times.
