“She asked me when I got home: ‘Dad, like, what are threats? Who wants to hurt us? Who wants to hurt me?’ Then, those conversations are difficult to treat, “McCullers told The Associated Press this week.

McCullers, who has two young daughters, took immediate measures after threats and contacted the team to ask about what could be done to protect his family.

The stars contacted MLB Security and the Houston Police Department after the threats to McCullers. A police spokesman said Thursday that it is still an ongoing investigation.

It was a movement that McCullers felt that it was necessary after what happened.

“You have to do it at that time,” he said.

The stars have uniformed police officers parked in the family section, a practice that was implemented long before McCullers and their family. The team also has mental health professionals available for players to talk about the toll that such abuse assumes them and any other problem that may be dealing.

McCullers, who returned this year after being lost two complete seasons with injuries, said that dealing with this has been the worst that has happened in his career. He understands the passion of fans and knows that being criticized for low performance is part of the game. But he believes that there is a “moral line” that fans should not cross.

“People should want us to succeed,” he said. “We want to succeed, but should not have a cost for our families, children in our lives, having to feel that they are not sure where they live or where they sit in the games.”

“It makes you a little shell a little,” he said. “It makes you not want to go to places. I suppose that is probably the human reaction to it.”

Boston’s red socks launcher Liam Hendriks also said he received death threats earlier this month.

“The threats against my life and my wife’s life are horrible and cruel. You need help,” Hendriks wrote in his Instagram history last week.

“Leaving comments that tell me to commit suicide and how I would like to die of cancer is disgusting and vile.”
