The search for Washington’s commanders of a playing field at the old RFK stadium site in DC took a big step on Friday when President Donald Trump exerted pressure on the organization for the nickname of his team.
The DC Council approved the bill with a 9-3 vote. But the legislation must be approved for the second time by the Council before being sent to the mayor of Washington, Muriel Bowser, who helped the commanders execute the plan earlier this year. The second vote will come on September 17.

Bowser, team owner Josh Harris and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced that he reached an agreement with DC officials at the former RFK stadium site in April. The three then joined Trump in the Oval office for a celebration after that.
The approved proposal would support a $ 3.7 billion re -urbanization project, with the new stadium, 6,000 housing units for a commercial space and a park. The capital of the Nation will also organize an upcoming NFL draft in the National Mall in 2027.
“Today’s approval of the Council is transformative for DC and leads the commanders to our spiritual home,” Harris said in a statement. “Like many fans, RFK was the site of memories that fed my love for this team and this city. Now we are closer than ever to rekindle that energy for a new generation.
“This is a historical moment. This project is more than delivering a world class stadium worthy of our players, fans and the region. It is about revitalizing a critical part of our city, creating thousands of jobs and unlocking long -term economic benefits for the district. We hope to work with our fans, residents, community leaders and elected officials to meet this vision.”

RFK now! An organization that raised the support to the commanders to obtain authorization for the stadium, expressed their happiness with the council for their vote.
“We are pleased that the Council has heard the residents of DC and has advanced a lot for our city,” said Malcom Fox, executive director of Opportunity DC and organizer of RFK now! He said in a press release. “Just a few years ago, bringing the commanders home seemed impossible. With today’s vote, we are on the way to ensure the greatest private investment in the history of Dc. This is a huge victory that will generate opportunities in room 7 and throughout the district in the coming decades.”
A key was thrown in the vote in July when Trump dismissed with the commanders for refusing to return to his name Redskins.
“I can put a restriction on them that if they do not change the name to the ‘Washington Redskins”, and getting rid of the ridiculous nickname, ‘Washington commanders’, I will not make a deal to build a stadium in Washington. The team would be much more valuable, and the agreement would be more exciting for everyone,” he wrote in the social truth.

Trump expressed his dislike with the name on Thursday when he announced the restoration of the presidential aptitude test.
“I don’t even know what the hell is his last name,” Trump said. “Are they commanders or something? Are they commanders? Commanders, isn’t it a good name.”
Harris has maintained that the name of the commanders is here to stay.
