The meeting comes after several high-profile terrorist attacks in the country attributed to Afghan and Indian elements.
On February 6, at least 32 worshipers were killed and dozens more injured when a huge bomb destroyed an imambargah in the Tarlai area of Islamabad. The explosion occurred during Friday prayers.
Nearly a week before the Islamabad incident, at least 37 terrorists were killed and 10 security personnel martyred after security forces foiled coordinated attacks at 12 locations in Balochistan. In a counter operation by security forces, a total of 216 terrorists were killed, while 22 security personnel embraced martyrdom.
Pakistan is also playing an active role in defusing the current tensions between Iran and the United States. On January 29, Foreign Minister Dar spoke with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi amid rising tensions in the Middle East, following renewed threats by US President Donald Trump to take military action against Iran.
After a few hours of conversation between Dar and Araghchi, Prime Minister Shehbaz also spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Both had urged Iran to maintain sustained dialogue and diplomatic engagement to promote peace, security and development in the region.
The last such meeting between the President and the Prime Minister on the country’s security issues was held in November, when they reaffirmed their determination to continue action against terrorists and their enablers until the threat is completely eliminated.
The meeting took place after two major terrorist attacks on the Cadet College in Wana in South Waziristan and the Islamabad court palace.
