The prime minister congratulates Aliyev in the Peace Agreement of Azerbaijan with Armenia

President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan spoke with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday, expressing a deep appreciation for Pakistan’s firm support on the subject of Karabakh, Radio Pakistan reported.

The prime minister extended the warm congratulations to President Aliyev and the people of Azerbaijan about the historical peace agreement of his country with Armenia. He praised the visionary leadership of Aliyev to resolve the conflict of three decades, qualifying it as a fundamental step towards regional prosperity.

Emphasizing Pakistan’s duty to help his Brothers and Sisters Azerbaijanos, the prime minister said: “He is encouraging who under the bold leadership and stay of President Aliyev, La Paz has finally established himself. Pakistan is firmly with Azerbaija.”

Prime Minister Shehbaz also praised the role of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, in the negotiation of the agreement, pointing out his contributions to end Karabakh conflicts and recent Indo-Pak conflicts.

President Aliyev, in turn, stressed that the Era of Stable Peace will improve connectivity opportunities between Pakistan and Central Asia. Both leaders expressed their satisfaction with the advancement of bilateral cooperation and reaffirmed the good mutual will.

Remembering his recent interactions in Lachin and Khankendi, the prime minister reiterated his invitation for an official visit from President Aliyev to Pakistan. The two are expected to meet again in Tianjin during the next SCO summit.

On Friday, Azerbaijan and Armenia concluded a peace agreement married to the US, facilitated by President Trump, marking an important diplomatic milestone. The agreement aims to normalize relationships, increase economic integration, maintain territorial integrity and include the development rights of the United States to a strategic transit corridor through the South Caucasus.

Armenia and Azerbaijan have disagreed since the late 1980s, when Nagorno-Karabakh, a mountainous region of Azerbaijan mostly populated by ethnic Armenians, separated from Azerbaiyan with the support of Armenia. Azerbaiyan recovered total control of the region in 2023, which caused almost all the 100,000 ethnic armenians of the territory to Huyan to Armenia.

Under the Soviet Union, Nagorno-Karabakh became an autonomous region within the Republic of Azerbaijan, and enjoyed de facto independence for decades after the Soviets collapsed in 1991.
