- Sony was the big winner in terms of sales this Black Friday
- The PS5 outsold the Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox systems thanks to deep discounts
- Xbox consoles were even surpassed by an obscure family game machine
If you’ve been keeping an eye on console deals this Black Friday, it probably won’t surprise you that the PlayStation 5 was the best-selling console of the sales event in the US and UK.
According to data from Circana, the PS5 represented 47% of console sales in the US, almost double that of the Nintendo Switch 2 (which reached 23%) and more than four times that of the Xbox (only 10%).
In short, the period was a big win for Sony and a disastrous performance for Microsoft. Even an obscure system called Nex Playground was more popular than the Xbox Series X and Series S, accounting for 14% of sales.
Designed for families, Nex Playground is a cube-shaped device that is advertised as an “active play area” rather than a traditional gaming console. It costs $249.99 and comes with five games out of the box, including fruit ninja.
Players control Nex Playground using motion control, captured by a camera on its front.
It was a similar story in the UK, where GSD reports that the PS5 had a 62% market share for the week. The Nintendo Switch 2 took in 23%, while Xbox systems accounted for just 10% of sales.
The reasons seem simple: the PS5 received by far the best discounts in both regions for Black Friday. Discounted bundles made it a very tempting option in the US, and the PS5 Slim Digital Edition dropped at an incredibly low price in the UK.
The Nintendo Switch 2 also received some discounts, although they were much more moderate, which is not surprising given the recent launch of the console.
By contrast, savings were nearly impossible to find on Xbox systems, presumably pushing consumers toward alternatives offered by Sony and Nintendo.
The best game consoles.
