New York islanders turned Matthew Schaefer defense into the number 1 team in the NHL Draft of 2025 on Friday.
The 17 -year -old Schaefer has 6 feet 2 and Hamilton, Ontario.
He spent the last two seasons with the Erie otie of the Ontario Hockey League.

Schaefer only played 17 games last year before breaking the clavicle in December, but his insight at both ice ends still promoted him to the top of almost all Draft boards.
Schaefer is only the fifth recruited defender No. 1 in general in the NHL draft since 2000, and the first since Owen Power went to Buffalo in 2021.

Schaefer persevered through the tragedy to reach this milestone. Schaefer’s mother, Jennifer, died of cancer 16 months ago, and endured the recent deaths of the owner of the otters, Jim Waters, and the mother of her family of packages.

The islanders won the lottery to choose first in a draft full of talent.
There was no absolute blockade of a selection No. 1 in this field, although Schaefer clearly came out at the top.
The draft also lacked the centralized format that has long been a basic element of this annual exercise. The various executives of the 32 teams are mostly at home, not on the floor of the draft in the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles.
