The Senate has approved the bill of wages and assignments (amendment) of parliamentarians (amendment) 2025, which will increase the salaries and benefits of legislators. Despite some opposition, the bill was approved by a majority vote after a formal vote was made to address the concerns of dissident members.
The bill, presented by Senator Danish Kumar, was approved unanimously, although vice president Syedal Khan ordered that the names of the dissident members be registered, indicating the contentious nature of the decision.
The law minister, Azam Nazeer Tarar, defended the salary increase, urging legislators to avoid politicizing the problem. He suggested that members who were not willing to accept the increase should submit a written statement and said that similar measures had been implemented at the provincial level.
His comments led to strong opposition protests, which caused an intervention of the vice president to restore the order in the Senate.
In addition to the salary bill, other legislative issues faced mixed results. The bill of Income Tax Ordinance (amendment) 2025, presented by Senator Zeeshan Khanzada, was opposed by the Minister of State for Finance, Ali Pervaiz Malik.
The bill of the State Bank of Pakistan (amendment) 2023, presented by Senator Mohsin Aziz, caused a debate, with Aziz insisting on his discussion in the Senate instead of being referred to a committee.
Other bills, such as the bill of law councils and lawyers (amendment) 2025, were postponed due to the absence of Senator FAROOQ H NAEK, while the draft Law on Sciences of the Sciences of Business and Technology of Business and Technology of Business and Technology Universidad 2025 was sent to the relevant Permanent Committee.
